| The Grey Balance Trainer is a unique computer software for the training of register and ink balance setting in an offset press. It is in fact an offset press with its reactions in real time to register, ink and dampening adjustments. Including the time delay inherent in the press, with scumming, tinting and hue shifts of different register settings. With a unique user interface, the Grey Balance Trainer will introduce itself to the printer within minutes. Running on standard PC hardware, you can do the training wherever and whenever convenient. A source to basic knowledge is there, too. An online 54-page Tutorial takes you through the basics of offset printing, presented in text, pictures and animations. |
Grey Balance is important... More and more newspapers are using grey balance targets to monitor and equalise their print quality. The Grey Balance Trainer has been developed with this in mind. This simple-to-use,yet advanced tool is ideal for training in a typical newspaper printing environment, where time is important and short production runs prevent all but the occasional use of measuring instruments, such as densitometers or spectrophotometers. It has been shown that the trained eye can achieve very fast and accurate results when adjusting ink with the aid of a grey balance target. The Grey Balance Trainer makes it possible to train the eye to assess and recognise a neutral grey hue. The concept of Standardised Printing means moving away from the "creative" approach ( i.e. making the picture look nice in your own eyes ) towards one of setting the same ink balance on every page, every day and in every press. This makes it possible to set the final print quality at the prepress stage, which is both much easier and more economical- and definitely more accurate. A grey balance target is not difficult to use but may be different from that method the printer is accustomed to. Hence the need for a Trainer, with familiar controls and functions, and with familiar responses to the settings being made - without any of the usual waste being produced. The Trainer ... The Grey Balance Trainer has all the usual controls associated with the setting of register, ink and dampening in an offset rotary press. You select one of four levels of difficulty and click Start. The press accelerates to a selected start up speed and at Impression On you see all the familiar artifacts in newspaper printing; scumming, tinting and misalignment. Your task is to make the displayed grey bar look the same as a reference bar in the smallest time and with a minimum of waste. A magnifier is on hand. Colour space and lightness graphs help to guide you during the first trials. Also present is the delay inherent in the printing process as well as dot gain effects. Once finished, you see how much time you have spent during the process and also the waste you have produced. The graphs will even tell you if you have a problem assessing colours. You can then either repeat the training session or choose a new one. All results can be saved and printed. The Tutorial ... Included with the trainer is a Tutorial which explains the context of the various issues governing four-colour printing in general and grey balance printing in particular. Each page covers one topic, along with colour picture or animation to assist understanding. The Tutorial takes you trough the normal functions and malfunctions of the offset printing process. An introduction to colour and grey balance theory concludes the text. The pictures and animations clarify the text even further. With this basic understanding you are ready to run the Grey Balance Trainer press, and adjust register, ink and water to perfection. Simple to set up, easy to use... The Grey Balance Trainer will run on a standard PC using Windows 98/2000/ME/NT systems. No special screen calibration is required. An online .pdf manual explains the functionality and installation routines. With easy- to-use, logical and familiar controls, the Grey Balance Trainer will introduce itself to the operator. If you have basic web offset press experience you are up and running within minutes. No press downtime, no paper waste... Just do the training whenever it is convenient. No teachers or coaches are needed - everything is there before your eyes. |
